Is it Permissible to Set Forth Examples for Allah?

Sheikh Saleh Al-Fawzan
Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He, says, “So put not forward similitudes for Allah (as there is nothing similar to Him, nor He resembles anything)” (An-Nahl: 74). But we hear many people set forth examples for Allah and then say, “To Allah belongs the highest description”; is this permissible? ‎ Like what? This is not permissible, asserting similarities to Allah, because Allah has forbidden it. In fact, this is making others similar or equal to Allah, and it is not permissible. But you can present an example and say, “To Allah belongs the highest description.” Allah has mentioned an example for that when mushrikoon (polytheists) said in their talbiyah (a pilgrimage prayer), “Here I am at Your service! You have no partner except the one who is Yours; You have dominion over him and over whatever he possesses”. ‎ Allah has set forth an example for them and said “He presents to you an example from yourselves. Do you have among those whom your right hands possess [i.e., slaves] any partners in what We have provided for you so that you are equal therein [and] would fear them as your fear of one another [within a partnership]? Thus, do We detail the verses for a people who use reason” [Ar-Rum:28]. ‎ Allah the Exalted has set forth an example for them from among themselves: do their servants share their wealth with them? Why do you say, “except for a partner who is Yours; You have dominion over him and over whatever he possesses”? You associate partners with Allah, may He be exalted, from amongst His slaves and you do not accept this for yourselves. You don’t accept that your slaves share your wealth with you. ‎ And Allah the Exalted said, “The creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of mankind.” [Ghafir:57]. This is just a logical example; as a matter of fact, nothing is beyond His capability.
