Is it permissible to ask people for money?

Sheikh Ibn Al-Uthaymeen
It is not permissible to ask anyone for money except what is necessary. For example, if someone is in need that is almost urgent, then there is no problem that he asks. As for asking without a dire need or urgency, surely this is forbidden. Many ahādīth have been reported warning against it, to the extent that the Prophet ﷺ informed that a man would come on the Day of Judgement with no meat on his face, we seek refuge from Allāh. The bones stick out from it infront of people on this great witnessed day. Also, the Sahābah, may Allāh be pleased with them, pledged to the Prophet ﷺ that they won't ask people for anything, to the point that if the whip of one of them fell from the top of his animal, he would not say to anyone: Give me the whip, Rather he went down and took the whip. And the one whom Allāh has honoured with self-sufficiency and modesty doesn't know the status of asking except if he is humiliated infront of people. How do you stretch your hand to the creation (asking) Give me, when you are like him? [The hadīth of Ibn 'Abbās, may Allah be pleased with them both] The Prophet ﷺ said: "If you ask then ask Allāh and if you seek help then seek help from Allāh"
