Ruling of Attending Weddings that Have Some Prohibitions

Question

In regards to weddings where people play "baloot" (a card game) and smoke shisha (Hookah), is it obligatory to accept their invitation (i.e., attend), O sheikh?

It is not permissible. (meaning of the Ayat in English): "Then after the remembrance sit not you in the company of those people who are the Zālimūn (polytheists and wrong-doers)." [Surah Al-An'am: 68] Questioner: Do we cut them off? Sheikh: However, if you attend and forbid (the munkar), then leave, you would have combined between carrying out the good and preventing the evil. Questioner: And if we are not able to (do that), we shouldn't attend? Sheikh: Yes.
