The major sins cannot be expiated except by repenting to Allah.
The expiation is for minor sins (only), "Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds" [Hūd:114]
This is for minor sins, and in the 5 compulsory prayers, because a man came to the Prophet ﷺ - the reason for the revelation of this Ayah is because a man came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him that he did everything with a woman, who is not permissible for him, except intercourse. So, can he repent to Allah?
The Prophet ﷺ remained silent about him until this Ayah was revealed to him:
"And offer Prayers perfectly at the two ends of the day, and in some hours of the night; (i.e. (five) compulsory prayers). Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds" [Hūd:114]
Meaning minor sins, "That is a reminder for those who remember." [Hūd:114]
The man asked, "Is this (instruction) for me only O Messenger of Allah, or for people in general? He said, "No, but for all people in general."
So, Allah expiates minor sins with the 5 compulsory prayers, as in the Hadith: "The five (daily) prayers and from one Friday prayer to the (next) Friday prayer, and from Ramadan to (the next) Ramadan are expiations for the (sins) committed in between them, as long as the major sins are avoided."
This indicates that expiation for sins is for minor sins only, as the major sins, they cannot be expiated except by repenting to Allah
