Question
What is the ruling on the one who has cursed his parents out of anger, or who cursed them intentionally? Is there an expiation or repentance for this cursing, whether he did it intentionally or otherwise? What does the one who cursed do? And in terms of repentance, can he repent?

Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen
Cursing one’s parents is a major sin. It is established that the Prophet ﷺ cursed whoever cursed his parents, whether cursing directly or indirectly (being the cause for it).
That’s because the Prophet ﷺ was asked: Does a man curse his parents? He said: “Yes, he insults a man’s father, so the man insults his father, and he insults his mother, so he (the man) insults his mother.” Cursing one’s parents, whether it is direct or indirect (being the cause for it), is a major sin.
And there is no difference whether that happens without a reason or because of anger, except that in the matter of anger, if a person reaches a state of anger that he does not know what he is saying, then in this case there is no sin upon him. That’s because he does not comprehend what he is saying, and Allah holds the abd (worshipper) accountable for what he comprehends, not for what he does not comprehend. However, when a person is very angry or quick to anger, he should use the means by which he can remove or reduce that. That’s because a man asked the Messenger ﷺ to give him an advice, and he said: “Do not be angry.” He repeated it several times, he said: "Do not be angry." If he feels angry, then he seeks refuge with Allah from the accursed Shaytan and performs ablution. This is one of the means for the removal of anger. Also, it’s one of the means for the removal of the consequences of anger, that a person moves away and withdraws from his opponent so that he does not fall into something forbidden.
As for repentance, he can repent. There is no sin that you can’t repent from, for Allah says: “Say: “O ‘Ibadi (My worshippers/creation) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah, verily Allah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Abundantly-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Az-Zumar 39:53)
However, since this sin is related to a person, it is necessary to rectify this repentance by asking for forgiveness from the one who was wronged so that the repentance is complete.
