Why do Calamities Befall us

Trouble and calamities only befall us because of our sins. Allah said: ظَهَرَ الْفَسَادُ فِي الْبَرِّ وَالْبَحْرِ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِي النَّاسِ “Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned” (Ar-Rum: 41). Our Lord, the Exalted, never sends punishment on people who are extremely upright. That is why when one of the mothers of the believers (wives of the Prophet ﷺ) said: “Shall we be destroyed while there are righteous people among us?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Yes, if there is much wickedness." So, we are afraid of being destroyed, and we ask Allah to rectify us.
