Question: The statement of Imam Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him, confused me where he described Ahlul Sunnah wal Jama’ah as: “They are not a people of Qiyas (analogy) or opinion, because Qiyas in the religion is false.” Answer: False Qiyas (is meant here), not correct Qiyas. Qiyas according to the Usooliyyun (scholars of the fundamentals of Jurisprudence) is to give the same ruling of an Asl (fundamental principle) to a Far’ (branch/division) because they have the same ‘illah (reason/cause). This is correct Qiyas. As for false Qiyas… The first one who made false Qiyas was Iblees: قَالَ أَنَا خَيْرٌ مِنْهُ خَلَقْتَنِي مِنْ نَارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُ مِنْ طِينٍ﴾ [الأعراف:12] ﴿ “He said,:“I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay.”” [Al-A’raf 7:12] He made the analogy that his origin is better than the origin of Adam and it is a false Qiyas. So, what is meant by this is the false Qiyas, not the correct Qiyas (i.e., what Imam Ahmed said).
