Looking Down on The Study of Islamic Sciences

Question: Many people nowadays have started to look down on the study of Islamic sciences. So, they say: Whoever has a low grade average or has little understanding, then he should go to an Islamic college. How do we respond to those people who have increased; because young people have now started turning away from studying in Islamic colleges, and [they say] that they have no future? Answer: These people are either ignorant and do not know the seeking of ‘Ilm (Islamic knowledge), or they are misguiding [others], they know, but they are misguided, and want to distract people from beneficial knowledge and from Islamic colleges. And they say: Only the lazy come to it, and only the idiots come to it, etc., and it has no future. Have you seen the students of the Faculty of Sharia now lost? And that they do not have jobs? They are now the leaders - and all praise be to Allah- they are the callers, they are the teachers, and they are the judges. This is something clear. So, the student of Islamic knowledge or the student of Islamic sciences now, and all praise be to Allah, is in glory and honor. We have not reached the point where a student of Islamic knowledge has no place in society. This is in the society of the non-Muslims, the society of the disbelievers, or those who have no desire for Islam. As for Muslim countries, the student of Islamic knowledge is honored, the people need him, they ask him, and they seek his advice. So, the student must think well of Allah the Almighty, he should seek Islamic knowledge and should not let the Dunya or jobs be his concern. وَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لا يَحْتَسِبُ وَمَنْ يَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ فَهُوَ حَسْبُهُ﴾ [الطلاق:3-2]) "And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out and will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him." [Al-Talaq: 2-3] So, he thinks well of Allah Almighty and goes on his way, and should not listen to the deceivers, the treacherous, and the hypocrites, because he is already convinced of what he is upon.
