Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen
All (types) of lying are prohibited, all of them lead to immorality, and there is no exception to this.
It has been narrated in a Hadeeth that three things are excluded from it (i.e., prohibition of lying): in battle, in reconciling between people, and when the husband and wife speak to each other. However, some people of knowledge have said that what is meant by 'lying' in this Hadeeth is tawriyah (intending by something a meaning different from what the listener is likely to understand) and not explicit lying. They said that tawriyah is called 'lying' as (mentioned) in the Hadeeth of Ibrahim that the Prophet ﷺ said: "Indeed he 'lied' three times." But he did not (actually) lie. Rather, he only implied a tawriyah about which he was truthful.
Whether it is this or that (i.e, regardless of whether Tawriyah is lying or not), lying is not permissible except in these three (circumstances) according to the view of many of the people of knowledge.
On the other hand, some scholars say: Lying is not permissible whatsoever, whether it’s joking or serious, whether it includes (the wrongful) consumption of (other's) wealth or not.
