Don't be deceived by what ignorant people are doing in different countries, like i'tikaf (withdrawing into worship) around graves and making Du’a (supplication) to the dead people inside these graves and seeking aid from them. This is the Shirk (polytheism) that Allah has forbidden. Allah said (meaning of which): {And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], ‘Worship Allah and avoid Taghut (everything worshipped besides Allah)’} (Al-Nahl: 36). Allah sent all of His messengers to denounce Shirk (polytheism) and call to the Tawheed (Oneness) of Allah and worshipping Him alone, Exalted is He. So, be careful, oh Abd (worshipper) of Allah, to fall into what the Mushriks (polytheists) fell into—worshipping graves, trees, idols, planets, or Jinn; all of this is Shirk (associating others with Allah). So, whosoever makes Du'a (supplication) to the Jinn and not Allah, planets, or idols or seeks aid from the dead or those who are not present has committed Shirk with Allah. He has fallen into the saying of Allah the Exalted (meaning of which): {Whoever associates others with Allah (in worship) will surely be forbidden Paradise by Allah. Their home will be the Fire. And the wrongdoers will have no helpers.} (Al-Maida: 72). Also, it’s mandatory to be careful of the ways that lead to Shirk, for instance: praying near graves, building Masjids on them, or making domes on them. All of these are means of committing Shirk. This is why the Prophet ﷺ said “Allah curse the Jews and Christians! They have taken the graves of their prophets as mosques." Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said: he is warning against what they have done; “Had it not been for that, the grave of the Prophet (ﷺ) would have been made prominent but I am afraid it might be taken (as a) place for praying.” And when He ﷺ was asked about the churches of the Christians, he replied: "When a pious person amongst them dies, they build a place of worship on his grave, and then decorate it with such pictures. They would be the worst of creatures on the Day of Judgment in the sight of Allah." He clarified that whosoever builds a place of worship on a grave or decorates it with such pictures are the worst of creatures in the sight of Allah. Thus, it’s obligatory to be cautious of these evil actions, the actions of the Jews, Christians, and the Mushriks. So, it’s mandatory that you devote your worship exclusively to Allah. You worship Him alone wherever you are, in your Du'a, fear, hope, Salah (prayer), fasting, animal sacrificing, and vowing—all of this for Allah alone.
