Sheikh Ibn Baz
A questioner asks: We want to know if Sadaqah (charity) reaches the dead while having this intention? For example, if we sacrifice a sheep, invite neighbours and relatives, and they eat from it, does this Sadaqah reach the dead? Yes, Sadaqah reaches the dead whether it is Sadaqah by money, food, clothes, endowment, or other than that. So, if he prepares a feast and calls the needy to it, or he honours his relatives, family members, and neighbours with it , intending the reward for his father, brother, mother, or something similar to this, then he gets an abundance of goodness by it . The scholars are upon consensus that Sadaqah reaches the dead, it's reward reaches the dead. There are many ahaadith regarding this from the Prophet ﷺ, he was asked about it. A woman asked him: "O Messenger of Allah, my mother died and she did not leave behind a will, Does she get reward if I give Sadaqah on her behalf ?" He said: "Yes." A man asked him something similar to this and he ﷺ said: Yes. Therefore, Sadaqah reaches the dead, likewise supplications and seeking forgiveness for them, supplicating for mercy for them, making Hajj, Umrah on their behalf, and slaughtering animals on their behalf; All of this reaches them.
