In the hereafter, the reward, punishment, actions, and what’s taken into account will be based on what is in the heart. However, in the Dunia (worldly life), what’s taken into account is that which is apparent. So, people are treated based on their apparent condition. However, if these apparent conditions conform with what is in the heart, his apparent (condition), hidden (contents of the heart), what he hides in himself, and what he shows are upright. And if they differ, such that the heart holds a bad intention- we seek refuge with Allah -, then how great is his loss?! He works and exhausts himself, but he gains nothing for this work, as mentioned in the authentic hadeeth of the Prophet (ﷺ) that: “Allah - the Exalted - said: ‘I am the most Self-sufficient from partnership. Whosoever does an act associating a partner with me in it, I will abandon him and what he associates.’”
