"Whosoever fasts during Ramadan out of faith while seeking its reward from Allah, Allah will forgive his previous sins." [Sahih al-Bukhari 38] The meaning of Iman (faith) here is: Believing that Allah has made it obligatory and believing in the rewards of his fasting. The meaning of Ihtisab (while seeking its reward) is that the person seeks his reward from Allah for fasting in this month. Many of us – praise be to Allah – perform Salah (pray). We all pray and fast during Ramadan. However, does it cross our hearts that we are seeking Allah's reward by it? And that Allah stores it for us (in the hereafter)? Most people are heedless of this. Most people only want to fulfill the obligation and forget about its rewards. I mean, it’s important that the reward crosses the mind of the worshipper. That’s why the Prophet ﷺ restricted this great reward for the person who fasts Ramadan; that his fasting is out of faith and while seeking his reward from Allah, and not out of habit.
