Sheikh Al-Albani
Questioner: What is the Sunnah of the Takbeer on Eid? When does it start and when does it end? How is it performed? Sheikh: Eid starts after Fajr Prayer, note that there is no textual proof for it. Rather it was acted upon from the words of the Most High. Which the beginning of the verse is {and (wants) for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that (to) which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.} [Al-Baqarah: 185] Which is the day of breaking your fast. Therefore it is a Sunnah for the Muslim tomorrow if it is Eid, or after tomorrow, that he leaves his house after haven broken his fast with dates. It is must before he goes to the place of prayer he makes sure to break his fast with dates, and within this is a beautiful meaning. That as the Muslim abstained from food in obedience to Allah the Blessed and Most High, he responds to his permission, so he breaks his fast with dates before he goes to the masjid. Rather to the Musallah (prayer place ) as this is a Sunnah. Then in his departure to the Masjid or to the Musallah it is a Sunnah for him to say takbeer and takbeer here is a ritual from the rituals of Eid. So it is desirable for the one doing the takbeer to raise his voice between his home and the prayer place, but it is not Sunnah to say the takbeer in congregation, for example if they are a group walking together, or they were riding in a car. Another questioner: Peace be upon you Sheikh: and May the peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you. It is not prescribed for them to intend to say the takbeer in a single voice. Rather the affair is like that of Hajj, each one says the takbeer for himself. So if two or more voices meet, and he or she walks together, there is nothing wrong with that. But they should not mean that they say the takbeer to Allah The Exalted in congregation with one voice. Then the one who is going to the prayer place continues to say the takbeer until he sits in it, and if he sits down, he remains there saying takbeer until the Imam comes. And when the Imam enters the prayer place and begins his Khutbah (religious sermon), there is no Sunnah that is specific for Eid in his Khutbah , contrary to what many Khateebs (the person who gives the Khutbah) act upon, where they begin their Khutbah with the takbeer. Another questioner: Peace be upon you Sheikh: And upon you be peace. For the opening of the Eid Khutbah or the Eid Khutbah with takbeer, it has no basis in the Sunnah at all, and everything that came about this subject is what Ibn Majah narrated in his Sunan that the Prophet ﷺ used to say the takbeer during the Eid Khutbah, i.e. during the sermon, he included in his Khutbah the takbeer. And this does not self-evidently mean that he used to begin his Khutbah with the takbeer. Also with that this hadith that I quoted to you earlier is from the Sunan of Ibn Majah. Its chain of narrators is weak, so it does not stand as evidence. And if this fact is established, then what is prescribed for the Eid Khutbah is what is prescribed for the Friday Khutbah and for every Khutbah. And that is he begins his Khutbah with what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ begun his Khutbah, by his saying ﷺ of (Verily all praise is to Allah, we praise him, we seek his help, and we seek his forgiveness) until the end of the Khutbah which is well known and that which has been revived, and Alhamdulillah (All praise is to Allah), by many of our brothers from the people of the Sunnah, where they begin the Khutbah with the same beginning that is legislated. There is nothing else in the Eid Prayer. And that the Khutbah given by the Khateeb on Eid should take into account the needs of the society he lives in. So he advices and he reminds. So the Eid Khutbah does not have a specific system that needs to be adhered to. As it was said, the people of Makkah know best about its pathways. So he has to notice what the people of that area need to be reminded of or taught about. Anything else?
