When Can a Man Marry a Second Wife?

The question: May Allah give you success. When can a man marry a second wife? And which is better; having more than one wife or a single wife? The answer: If he finds himself capable physically, financially and in dealing (with a spouse), and marriage becomes easy for him, then let him get married. Allah says: {You will never be able to do perfect justice between wives even if it is your ardent desire, so do not incline too much to one of them (by giving her more of your time and provision).} [4:129] The Prophet ﷺ said: “Marry, for I shall outnumber the nations by you.” [Abu Dawud 2050] A man might get married, for example he finds a land with many unmarried women due to wars or diseases etc. One sees many women without husbands, and he is able to marry, then this is from Ihsan (righteousness and doing good to people). However, (this is done) with accustoming oneself to adhere to the necessary rights of the woman upon the man.
